Search Posey County Dockets

Start a Posey County docket search with Indiana's statewide public case system, which pulls nonconfidential records from the Odyssey platform. You can look up a case by number, citation, cross-reference number, party name, or attorney. Filter the results down to Posey County and the right case category. Keep expectations in line, though. A public result is a handy case summary, not a guaranteed full copy of the clerk's official file. For the best Posey County case search, begin with the most exact identifier you have, learn to read the court code, and call the clerk whenever a record is missing, converted, confidential, or needed as a certified copy.

Name-Based Case Searches

Indiana MyCase is the main public Posey County docket search. Pick the Name tab and type a party's last name. Then add a first name, middle name, or birth date to cut the noise. Set Posey County as the court filter. Names are tricky. The form gives you two helpers: a trailing asterisk for a name ending, and a sounds-like option to test a spelling variant. Businesses get their own field. Use the official form of the company name there for the best chance at a match.

  1. Open MyCase and select the Name tab.
  2. Enter the last name and at least one added personal identifier.
  3. Select Posey County, then choose the useful category and status filters.
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA and submit the search.
  5. Compare the court, case number, filing date, and party role before opening a result.

The public search costs nothing and asks for no name. It exists for individual case access, not automated collection. Broad queries can hit a ceiling of 1,000 results, so the county, category, status, and file-date controls are worth using before you go fishing.

Posey MyCase Fields Up Close

MyCase offers Case, Name, and Attorney tabs, and the official field template lays out how each set of controls is organized.

Note where the form puts things. Exact case identifiers sit apart from the party fields, which is why a citation should never be pasted into the cross-reference box.

Case Number Searches

Indiana Administrative Rule 8 gives every case a grouped identifier. A modern Posey number looks like 65C01-2608-IF-000123. The first two digits, 65, are the county code. Next come a letter and digits naming the court. After that comes the filing year and month, then a two-letter case type, and the filing sequence. Circuit files carry 65C01; Superior carries 65D01.

Type the whole value when you can. MyCase allows you to drop hyphens and leading zeros in a case-number search. Citation and cross-reference formats can be exact, though. The current Rule 8 spells out the format and the case-type codes. One more wrinkle: 65E01 belonged to the Posey County Court, which no longer exists. Its archived Odyssey cases may still surface, but it is not a current filing court.

Posey Codes Narrow the Docket

Case categories keep a docket search from sprawling. IF means infraction, CM means criminal misdemeanor, and F1 through F6 mark felony levels. The civil side uses PL for plenary, CC for collection, CT for tort, MF for mortgage foreclosure, SC for small claim, and EV for eviction. Family and probate cases carry their own codes.

IF
An Indiana infraction case, currently assigned to Posey Circuit Court.
OV or OE
A local ordinance case code; current Posey allocation sends ordinance violations to Superior.
CCS
The Chronological Case Summary, an ordered history of case events.
Converted event
An older entry imported from a prior case system.
RJO
The Record of Judgments and Orders linked to court action.

Pick the MyCase category that fits when you know it: Criminal and Citation, Civil, Family, or Probate. The court dropdown lists Posey options. It shows no separate Posey city or town court.

Case Search Results Explained

A result card flags a candidate case, nothing more. Open it and compare enough fields to avoid mixing up similar names. The public view can include the case caption, parties and their roles, charges or claims, the court, the judicial officer, financial information, and CCS events. Some documents are linked right there. Others sit only with the clerk.

Case numberCounty, court, filing date group, type, and sequence.
CourtPosey Circuit, Posey Superior, or an archived identifier.
PartiesPublic names and their roles where access rules permit.
EventsFilings, settings, orders, judgments, and disposition entries.
FinancialsA displayed balance that should be confirmed with the clerk before payment.

MyCase is not the official record, and it can lag or omit something. A CCS is broader than a single result card yet narrower than the complete Clerk's Record, which holds pleadings, papers, orders, and judgments.

Posey Search Filters Prevent Overload

Query a common name and you may pull up far too many Indiana cases at once. The official MyCase search tips lay out several ways to narrow things. Choose Posey County. Apply the court or category when known. Then restrict status and add a filing-date range. Let a wildcard widen only the part of the name you are unsure about.

Posey County docket search tips and filters

The tips back a steady progression: exact identifier first, then a controlled name search. Still over 1,000 results? Add a first name, date of birth, category, or a tighter file-date range. A CAPTCHA is an anti-data-mining safeguard, not a sign that a case is sealed. And when the right move is asking the clerk about a known case number, stop broadening the search.

Two Ways to Search: County and State

Posey runs no separate county docket database. MyCase is the statewide public layer, while the elected Clerk of the Posey Circuit and Superior Courts keeps the official county file. The two channels serve different needs.

The county clerk page posts counter and copy information. Circuit records are served at 300 Main Street, Room 115; Superior records at 126 East Third Street, Room 133.

Posey Odyssey Courts Since 2010

The Odyssey court list gives Posey Circuit and Superior the same go-live date of August 16, 2010. That history matters for what you will see in a docket. Newer cases tend to have native Odyssey event structures. Older material can include converted entries. A converted event may lack the document link or the clean labels of a newer case. The official Rule 8 page makes the identifier groups easier to recognize at a glance.

Think of the case code as a routing tool. The 65 flags Posey, and the court segment separates current Circuit and Superior files from the abolished county-court archive.

Which Cases Stay Restricted

Most Posey County court records are open. Some material is off limits or partially hidden, though. That includes juvenile cases, adoptions, mental-health files, sealed cases, expunged cases, protection orders, and red-flag matters. ACR Rule 5 sets out which categories stay confidential and what must be redacted. When a record is excluded from public access, ACR Rule 9 offers a verified-request process to ask for it.

A missing MyCase result can mean a bad identifier, an older or unconverted record, a court outside Odyssey, or a restricted case. It does not prove that no case exists.

Not every Posey County case lives in the same place. Protection orders run through Indiana's separate public search. Marriage-license information sits in its own lookup. Federal cases are different again. Those go through PACER or the federal court's CM/ECF system. Very old Posey circuit records are elsewhere. They may rest with the clerk, the State Archives, or the State Library instead.

When a Posey Search Fails

A failed docket search usually has a fix. Start over with the full case number. Then try the printed citation or cross-reference in its own field. When only a name is known, relax one filter at a time. Keep Posey County selected. Check the spelling, any former business suffix, and whether the case belongs in another category. And never assume a financial balance shown in the docket is current. Still nothing? Call the unified clerk at 812-838-1306. Give the case identifier and an approximate filing date. Add the court if known, plus the exact record you need. Visit the appropriate clerk counter in person. You can also ask about mailing a written request. For a certified copy, describe the precise document rather than requesting the whole court file. Indiana's official records-request routing sorts requests by type. It covers court files, transcripts, criminal histories, marriage and divorce records, and adoption material. That separation matters. A docket search is not the same as ordering one of those other government records.
